Meet Kurt Decorte
Founder of Horizon Impact Travel
Before creating Horizon Impact Travel, I spent more than 20 years working in travel and lived extensively in Asia.
Over the years, I met many people who wanted to volunteer abroad but struggled to find programs that matched the way they liked to travel.
One thing I've learned after helping travellers compare volunteer programs is that the best destination isn't always the most popular one. I usually start by understanding how people want to travel before recommending where they should go.

Who Our Volunteer Programs Are For
Horizon Impact Travel is aimed at travellers who want a structured volunteer experience without shared dorms, backpacker-style group travel or very basic accommodation.
It's ideal for families, couples, adults over 30 and retirees looking for a more comfortable way to volunteer abroad. If you're searching for luxury family volunteer vacations or premium volunteer travel, you'll find options that better suit your style.
Families
Volunteer together while staying in accommodation better suited to parents travelling with children.
Couples
Combine meaningful volunteering with time to explore your destination together while enjoying greater privacy.
Adults Aged 30+
Designed for travellers who want a more comfortable alternative to backpacker-style volunteering.
Retirees
Stay active, contribute your skills and experience local communities at a comfortable pace.
Horizon may not be the right choice if you're looking for the cheapest volunteer placement, shared dormitory accommodation or a backpacker-style social experience.

Frequently Asked
If you're unsure where to volunteer abroad, don't choose a destination first. Start by thinking about who you're travelling with, how much comfort you want and the type of volunteering experience you're looking for. We can then recommend destinations that genuinely match your travel style rather than simply showing every available option. Questions
Who are Horizon Impact Travel programs designed for?
The volunteer programs we feature are particularly well suited for adults aged 30+, couples, families, professionals, retirees, and mature solo travellers. If you've found that many volunteer organisations seem geared towards students, backpackers, or gap-year travellers, Horizon offers a different approach.
Why choose Horizon Impact Travel instead of booking directly with a volunteer organisation?
Horizon Impact Travel helps you compare volunteer programs from carefully selected local program partners, rather than limiting you to a single organisation's options. We'll help you choose the destination and program that best suits your travel style, accommodation preferences and goals, while providing personalised booking support and pre-departure guidance. Volunteer placements, accommodation and in-country support are delivered by the local program partner.
How do you choose your local program partners?
We look for local program partners that offer well-organised volunteer programs, clear communication, reliable local support and accommodation that suits Horizon's audience of families, couples and adults aged 30+. We also consider whether volunteers have a meaningful role and whether the program provides realistic expectations about the experience. We only recommend programs that align with our focus on comfortable, well-supported volunteer travel.
Is private accommodation included?
Yes. Private accommodation is included on every Horizon Impact Travel program.
Accommodation varies by destination and may include private rooms, apartments, guesthouses, or family-friendly accommodation, but privacy is always part of the experience.
Can couples volunteer abroad together?
Absolutely. Many of our volunteer programs are well suited to couples looking to combine meaningful travel with quality time together.
Are families welcome?
Yes. Several destinations offer family-friendly volunteer opportunities suitable for parents travelling with children or teenagers.
We'll help you identify destinations and projects that match your family's needs and interests.
Do I need previous volunteer experience?
In most cases, no.
Many projects welcome volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds. Specific requirements vary by destination and project, and we'll explain any requirements before you book.
How long can I volunteer abroad?
Program lengths vary depending on the destination and project.
Whether you're looking for a short volunteer holiday or a longer placement, we can help you find an option that fits your schedule.
What support will I receive?
We provide booking support, destination guidance, and pre-departure assistance. In-country support is provided by the local program partner responsible for delivering the volunteer placement.
Before you leave, we'll make sure you understand what to expect, what to bring and who to contact if you need help.
How much does volunteer travel cost?
Costs vary depending on the destination, accommodation, project type, and length of stay.
Each destination page includes pricing information, and we're happy to discuss options based on your travel plans and budget.
What happens after I submit an enquiry?
Once you get in touch, we'll learn more about who is travelling, your preferred dates, interests and travel style. We'll then recommend suitable volunteer programs operated by our carefully selected local program partners, answer any questions you have and explain the accommodation, costs and booking process. There's no obligation to book, we're here to help you decide whether a program is the right fit for you.
