Volunteer in Cambodia For
Families, Couples & Adults

Horizon Impact Travel is different.

Our volunteer programs in Cambodia are designed specifically for families, couples and 30+ adult volunteers, with private accommodation included. Projects are available in Siem Reap and Samraong, with opportunities including English teaching, classroom support, and community construction and renovation projects.

Most volunteer organisations are focused on young people, students and backpackers, staying in shared volunteer housing. We specialise in helping adults, couples, families, and retirees participate in meaningful volunteer projects while enjoying private accommodation, local support, and a program tailored to their interests and travel style that best balances contribution, comfort, and cultural immersion.

Why Choose Cambodia?

Many travellers choose Cambodia because it combines purposeful travel with cultural exploration. Time spent volunteering can be combined with visits to Angkor Wat, local markets, temples, countryside communities, and other highlights of the region.

Welcoming Communities

Cambodia is known for its friendly communities and strong local connections. Volunteering provides an opportunity to spend time with local people and gain a deeper understanding of everyday life beyond the typical tourist experience.

Education-Focused Projects

Many travellers choose Cambodia because of the opportunity to support local schools and educational initiatives. Projects focus on helping children develop confidence and practical English skills while working alongside local teachers.

Rich Culture & History

From the temples of Angkor to traditional villages and local markets, Cambodia offers a fascinating blend of history, culture, and daily life.

Authentic Community Experience

Compared with some more developed destinations, Cambodia offers a stronger sense of community immersion and a chance to experience a different side of Southeast Asia.

A Note From Kurt, Founder of Horizon Impact Travel

I created Horizon Impact Travel to help families, couples and adults find volunteer programs that feel meaningful, well-supported and comfortable to join. Here’s my personal view on Cambodia and how I’d approach it.

Cambodia is a strong choice for adults, couples and families who want a volunteer experience that combines community involvement with cultural depth. It works particularly well for travellers interested in education, local connection and a destination that feels rewarding beyond the volunteer placement itself. With programmes in both Siem Reap and Samraong, Cambodia offers a good balance between accessible first-time volunteering and more immersive community-based experiences.

If you’re visiting Cambodia for the first time, I’d usually suggest starting in Siem Reap. It offers a smoother introduction to the country, access to excellent volunteer opportunities and the chance to visit Angkor Wat during your trip. If this is also your first time in Cambodia or Asia, I’d strongly consider adding the Culture Week before your placement begins. For travellers looking for a quieter and more community-focused experience, Samraong is well worth considering, particularly if you’re interested in the Greenway School project and a deeper connection with rural Cambodia.

Volunteer Opportunities in Cambodia

Cambodia offers several ways to get involved depending on your interests, travel dates, and preferred location.

Programs are currently available in Siem Reap and Samraong, each offering a different experience while supporting local education and community initiatives.

On the first day of your volunteering you will join our orientation to familiarize you with the local surroundings as well as local culture and information about your project.

Cultural Immersion Week

Many travellers choose to begin their Cambodia program with a Cultural Immersion Week in Siem Reap before starting their volunteer placement. Rather than arriving and immediately starting project work, you'll spend your first week learning about Cambodian culture, traditions, food, religion, language, and daily life.

While participation is optional, many first-time visitors find it provides valuable context and helps them settle into Cambodia before beginning their volunteer placement.

  • Learn basic Khmer language phrases
  • Understand local customs and etiquette
  • Visit temples and cultural sites
  • Explore local markets
  • Gain confidence before starting your project
  • Meet other international volunteers
  • Learn about Cambodian history and culture
  • Enjoy a smoother transition into daily life

Example Cambodia Volunteer Itinerary

Recommended First-Time Cambodia Experience (2 Weeks)

One of our most popular Cambodia options for first-time volunteers, couples, and families.

Week 1
Join the Culture Week in Siem Reap. Settle into Cambodia while learning about local customs, food, traditions, and daily routines.

Week 2
Begin your chosen volunteer project with a much stronger understanding of the local culture and environment.

This combination gives travellers both a cultural introduction and meaningful project time without feeling rushed straight into volunteering on arrival.

You can skip the Cultural Immersion Week if you want, and do only volunteering.

Is Cambodia Right For You?

Cambodia is an excellent choice for adults, couples, and families seeking a more community-focused volunteer experience.
