One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "Which destination would you choose for your own family?" The honest answer is that there isn't one perfect destination. The right choice depends on your family's interests, your children's ages, how you like to travel and what you hope to take away from the experience.
Here are some of the recommendations I regularly share with families planning a volunteer trip abroad.
Choose Bali if you want the easiest introduction to family volunteer travel.
Bali is often my recommendation for families volunteering abroad for the first time. The island combines meaningful volunteer programs with excellent tourism infrastructure, comfortable private accommodation and plenty of opportunities to relax together between volunteering. If your priority is balancing comfort with purpose, Bali is hard to beat.
Choose Thailand if wildlife, beaches or variety are important.
Thailand suits families looking for flexibility. Depending on the volunteer program, you can combine community projects or wildlife conservation with beaches, cultural experiences and family-friendly accommodation. It's an excellent option if everyone in the family has slightly different interests.
Don't overlook Cambodia if meaningful cultural experiences matter most.
Cambodia is often overshadowed by better-known destinations, but it consistently surprises families. If your goal is genuine cultural immersion and spending time with local communities rather than simply ticking off tourist attractions, Cambodia deserves serious consideration.
Luxury isn't always worth paying extra for.
Comfortable accommodation can make travelling with children much easier, especially after a rewarding day of volunteering. However, I don't believe the most expensive hotel automatically creates the best family experience. If choosing simpler accommodation allows you to extend your trip, visit another destination or spend more time volunteering, that often provides far greater long-term value.
Prioritise the right itinerary before the nicest accommodation.
Years later, families rarely talk about the size of their hotel room. They remember the people they met, the wildlife they helped protect, the children they worked alongside and the experiences they shared together. That's why I always recommend choosing the right destination and volunteer program first, then finding the most suitable accommodation for your family's travel style and budget.
Every family is different, which is why I never recommend destinations based on popularity alone. I'll always explain the advantages and trade-offs of each option and tell you honestly if I believe another destination or volunteer program would be a better fit for your family. My goal isn't to recommend the most expensive trip—it's to help you choose the one you'll remember for years to come.
