I've spent a lot of time living and travelling in Thailand, so it remains one of my personal favourite destinations and one I recommend often. It's a very easy country to enjoy, but it also works particularly well for volunteer travel because it combines welcoming local culture, good infrastructure, and a choice of very different program settings.
If you're drawn to mountains, temples and northern Thai culture, I'd normally recommend Chiang Mai. If you'd rather combine volunteering with a relaxed coastal atmosphere, Hua Hin is often a better fit. Koh Samui is ideal for travellers who want the experience of volunteering while enjoying Thailand's tropical island lifestyle.

The right length depends on what you want your Thailand trip to include. I would not choose the number of volunteer weeks first. Start with the overall trip you want, then work out how much time should be spent volunteering.
One Week
A one-week volunteer placement can work if you have limited time, but it gives you less opportunity to settle into the project and experience the destination beyond volunteering.
It can make sense when volunteering is one part of a shorter holiday rather than the main purpose of the trip.
Two to Three Weeks
For many families and couples, two to three weeks is a useful starting point.
