Volunteer in the Philippines For Families, Couples & Adults

Horizon Impact Travel is different.

Volunteer programs in the Philippines operated by carefully selected local program partners, with supported project options in Palawan, including Culture Week, Kindergarten, Teaching, and Construction & Renovation.

We help adults, couples and families choose volunteer programs in Palawan that combine community-based project work with more comfortable accommodation and a more supported planning process than a typical backpacker-style volunteer trip.

A Note From Kurt, Founder of Horizon Impact Travel

I created Horizon Impact Travel to help families, couples and adults find volunteer programmes that feel meaningful, well-supported and comfortable to join. Here’s my personal view on the Philippines and how I’d approach it.

The Philippines is one of my favourite countries in the world and a destination I recommend very highly. I’ve travelled widely there, and what stands out most is the warmth of the people, the relaxed atmosphere, and the mix of local culture, island scenery, and genuinely rewarding volunteer opportunities.

Our projects are based in Palawan. You’ll usually fly into Puerto Princesa, where you’ll be met, and then continue on to the project area in the countryside around two hours away. That more rural setting is part of what makes the experience feel so different from a standard holiday in the Philippines.

If you have the time, I’d strongly consider starting with the Culture Week. It’s a great introduction to local life and helps you arrive at your placement feeling more settled and better prepared. From there, we can help you choose the project and overall programme structure that best fits your interests, travel plans, and who you’re travelling with.

Why Choose the Philippines?

The Philippines is a good fit for travellers who want a more community-based volunteer trip in an island setting rather than a city programme. Horizon’s current projects are based in Palawan and focus on Kindergarten, Teaching, Construction & Renovation, plus an optional Culture Week before the placement begins.

Community-Based Volunteering

In Palawan, the volunteer projects are linked to local schools and community spaces rather than being separate from everyday village life. That makes the experience more community-based than a standard sightseeing trip.

A Good Fit for First-Time Volunteers

The Philippines can work well for first-time volunteers because the projects are accessible, Culture Week offers a structured introduction, and you do not need specialist qualifications for the main placements.

Culture, Island Life & Everyday Local Experience

Time in Palawan is not limited to the placement itself. Depending on your programme structure, you may also spend time in local markets, village areas and the surrounding community rather than staying inside a tourist zone.

Practical, Visible Impact

The current Palawan projects are relatively easy to understand: volunteers either help with classroom-based support for children or assist with practical improvement work such as painting, cleaning, preparation and light renovation in shared community spaces.

Volunteer Opportunities in the Philippines

Current Philippines programs in Palawan include Culture Week, Kindergarten, Teaching, and Construction & Renovation.

On the first day of your volunteering you will join our orientation to familiarize you with the local surroundings as well as local culture and information about your project.

Culture Week in Palawan

Many travellers choose to begin their programme with a Culture Week in Palawan before starting their volunteer placement.

This week is designed to help you settle in, understand local life, and start your project with more confidence. Activities may include language, cooking, local markets, waterfalls, farms, handicrafts, pottery, orientation, and project preparation.

Rather than arriving and immediately starting volunteer work, you begin by learning more about the community, local culture, and the setting you’ll be living and volunteering in.

Good for: First-time volunteers, cultural immersion, travellers wanting a soft landing before projects

Kindergarten in Palawan

Support children aged approximately 3 to 6 with basic English, numbers, shapes, letters, songs, games, colouring, and classroom routines.

This project is best suited to volunteers who are patient, friendly, and comfortable working with younger children. The emphasis is not on formal teaching qualifications, but on practical support, encouragement, and helping create a positive classroom environment.

Good for: Volunteers interested in childcare, patient volunteers, early education support, families with an interest in child-focused projects

Teaching in Palawan

Support children aged roughly 6 to 12 with practical English, basic maths, simple science, games, songs, and classroom activities.

The focus is on confidence-building, communication, and assisting local teachers with age-appropriate classroom support rather than delivering a formal teaching programme independently.

Good for: Travellers interested in teaching, education students, confident volunteers, first-time volunteers with a positive and flexible attitude

Construction & Renovation in Palawan

Help improve schools, health centres, homes, and community spaces through painting, cleaning, preparation, and light renovation work.

Activities vary depending on local priorities and current community needs, but the project is designed for volunteers who prefer practical, hands-on work and enjoy contributing to visible improvements in shared spaces.

Good for: Practical volunteers, hands-on support, community improvement, active travellers, couples or families with older teenagers

Choose Your Philippines Experience

The Philippines programme is based in Palawan, with volunteer opportunities connected to the local community around Tigman Village / Aborlan.

Rather than choosing between several very different destinations, most travellers begin by choosing the type of project that best matches their interests, energy level, and travel style.

Start Your Philippines Experience With a Culture Week

Many travellers choose to begin their Philippines programme with a Culture Week in Palawan before starting their volunteer placement.

This is especially popular with families, couples, first-time volunteers, and travellers who want a deeper understanding of local life before joining a project.

Rather than arriving and immediately starting volunteer work, you’ll spend your first week settling into the local environment, getting to know the community, and experiencing key parts of everyday life in Palawan.

The Culture Week is designed to make the transition into your volunteer project smoother, more comfortable, and more meaningful.

Why Start With Culture Week?

✓ Settle into the Philippines gradually before beginning your project
✓ Learn about local customs, daily life, and the surrounding community
✓ Gain confidence before joining your volunteer placement
✓ Experience local food, markets, and everyday routines
✓ Get a more immersive introduction to Palawan beyond the project itself
✓ Particularly valuable for first-time volunteers and families

Culture Week May Include

  • Introductory language sessions
  • Local cooking
  • Market visits
  • Waterfalls and local sightseeing
  • Farm visits
  • Handicrafts and pottery
  • Cultural orientation
  • Project preparation

The Culture Week is not mandatory, but we strongly recommend it for travellers who want a softer arrival and a more rewarding overall experience in the Philippines.

Accommodation, Comfort & Support

Volunteer travel does not have to mean shared dormitories, crowded hostels, or sacrificing comfort.

Horizon Impact Travel is designed specifically for adults, couples, families, professionals, and retirees who want to contribute to worthwhile projects while enjoying privacy, comfort, and local support throughout their stay.

Whether you’re travelling alone, as a couple, or with children, we’ll help create a Philippines programme that matches your preferred level of accommodation and travel style.

Private accommodation is included where stated in the programme description and is provided by the local program partner.

Unlike many volunteer organisations that focus on shared volunteer housing, Horizon Impact Travel prioritises privacy, comfort, and personal space for adults, couples, and families.

Travelling with children or as a couple often requires a different approach from traditional volunteer programmes.

Depending on the local partner and availability, accommodation options may include:

✓ Flexible programme durations

Local Support Throughout Your Stay

Is the Philippines Right for You?

The Philippines tends to suit travellers who want a Palawan-based volunteer trip with a strong community focus, straightforward project options and a more local, village-based setting than a city programme or resort-style holiday.

The Philippines Could Be a Good Fit If You:

✓ Want to combine travel with a practical volunteer project
✓ Prefer private accommodation rather than shared volunteer housing
✓ Are travelling as a couple, family, mature solo traveller, professional, or retiree
✓ Enjoy cultural immersion as much as volunteering
✓ Are interested in teaching, kindergarten support, or practical community improvement
✓ Want a softer landing through a Culture Week before your project
✓ Like the idea of a more local, community-based experience in Palawan

The Philippines May Not Be the Best Fit If You:

✗ Are looking for a highly remote expedition-style programme
✗ Want a specialist conservation or wildlife-focused project rather than community work
✗ Prefer a fast-paced backpacker environment
✗ Want a programme built around luxury travel rather than volunteering and community engagement
✗ Are looking only for very short, sightseeing-focused travel with minimal project time

Still Not Sure?

Choosing the right destination depends on your goals, available time, preferred accommodation, and who is travelling with you.

Tailor-Made Philippines Programmes

No two travellers are looking for exactly the same experience.

Some families want to focus on Kindergarten support. Others prefer Teaching or Construction & Renovation. Some travellers want a volunteer-focused programme, while others prefer to combine project work with cultural experiences and additional travel in the Philippines.

Volunteer programmes vary depending on the project, accommodation arrangements, travel dates, and who is travelling.

Every programme is built around your goals, travel dates, preferred accommodation, group size, and the type of experience you are looking for.

What Influences the Cost?

The final price depends on several factors, including:

✓ Number of travellers
✓ Length of stay
✓ Project selection
✓ Accommodation standard
✓ Time of year
✓ Additional travel arrangements
✓ Pre- or post-programme extensions

Programmes Typically Start €1,000 / £850 / US$1,150 per person

Couples, families, private group departures, and longer stays are quoted individually.

Your personalised proposal will clearly outline accommodation options, recommended projects, inclusions, and a suggested itinerary before you make any commitment.

Yes. Several Philippines project options can work well for families, depending on the ages of the children, the project schedule, and the type of experience you want. We’ll help you choose the most suitable option during the planning process.

Can couples volunteer together in the Philippines?

Absolutely. The Philippines can be a very good choice for couples who want to combine meaningful volunteer work with cultural immersion and time to explore.

No. Most projects welcome participants from a wide range of backgrounds. What matters most is a positive attitude, flexibility, patience, and a willingness to contribute where needed.

How long should I stay in the Philippines?

Many travellers stay between one and three weeks, although shorter and longer programmes can often be arranged depending on the project and your travel plans.
