Volunteer in Bali For
Families, Couples & Adults

Horizon Impact Travel is different.

Our volunteer programs in Bali are designed specifically for families, couples and 30+ adult volunteers, with private accommodation included, in carefully selected local projects in Ubud and Nusa Penida.

Most volunteer organisations are focused on young people, students and backpackers, staying in shared volunteer housing. We specialise in helping adults, couples, families, and retirees participate in meaningful volunteer projects while enjoying private accommodation, local support, and a program tailored to their interests and travel style that best balances contribution, comfort, and cultural immersion.

Why Choose Bali?

Bali combines rich culture, welcoming communities, beautiful scenery, and a variety of volunteer opportunities that work well for adults, couples, and families. From the cultural heart of Ubud to the island setting of Nusa Penida, Bali offers a rewarding way to contribute while also experiencing one of Southeast Asia’s most distinctive destinations.

A Strong Cultural Experience

Bali is far more than beaches and resorts. Daily life is shaped by temple traditions, ceremonies, offerings, village customs, and a strong sense of community. For many volunteers, Bali offers one of the most culturally immersive volunteer experiences in Asia.

A Good Mix of Projects

Bali offers a combination of teaching, community support, practical renovation work, and conservation-focused volunteering. This makes it a strong choice for travellers who want to match their trip to a specific interest, whether that is education, hands-on community work, or wildlife conservation.

Ideal for First-Time Volunteer Travellers

With established tourism infrastructure, a wide choice of accommodation, and a welcoming atmosphere, Bali can be an excellent destination for first-time volunteers, couples, and families who want support without feeling they are joining a backpacker-style program.

Easy to Combine With a Holiday

Many travellers choose Bali because it is easy to combine volunteering with time to relax and explore. Rice terraces, temples, cafés, beaches, local villages, and island scenery make it easy to build a trip that includes both purposeful project time and time to enjoy Bali itself.

A Note From Kurt, Founder of Horizon Impact Travel

I created Horizon Impact Travel to help families, couples and adults find volunteer programs that feel meaningful, well-supported and comfortable to join. Here’s my personal view on Bali and how I’d approach it.

Bali is one of the destinations I often recommend to adults, couples and families looking for a volunteer trip that combines meaningful local involvement with a relatively easy and comfortable introduction to Asia. It offers a strong mix of culture, community-based projects and flexible programme options, which makes it particularly well suited to first-time volunteer travellers as well as those wanting to combine volunteering with time to explore.

If this is your first time in Bali, I’d strongly recommend starting with the Culture Week before joining your main project. It gives you time to settle in, understand local customs and daily life, and start your placement with more confidence. In general, I’d suggest Ubud if you’re most interested in culture, teaching or community projects, and Nusa Penida if turtle conservation is the main priority. If you have enough time, combining both can work very well and gives you a broader experience of Bali.

Volunteer Opportunities in Bali

Bali offers several ways to get involved, depending on your interests, travel style, and the ages of those travelling with you. Some travellers are drawn to cultural immersion and teaching, while others prefer practical renovation work or conservation-focused experiences.

Bali currently offers two distinct volunteer settings, each with its own character, project opportunities, and pace of life.

Ubud is Bali’s cultural heart and a popular base for travellers who want a strong mix of Balinese culture, community-based volunteering, and easy access to local life. Surrounded by temples, villages, rice terraces, and artisan traditions, it offers a more immersive inland Bali experience.

Nusa Penida offers a more island-based and outdoors-focused volunteer experience. It is best known within the programme for Turtle Conservation, making it a good choice for travellers who want a conservation element and are happy with a more active, outdoor routine.

On the first day of your volunteering you will join our orientation to familiarize you with the local surroundings as well as local culture and information about your project.

Cultural Immersion Week in Ubud

We recommend to start your experience with this week.

Many travellers choose to begin their Bali program with a Cultural Immersion Week before starting their volunteer placement.

This is particularly popular with families, couples, first-time volunteers, and travellers who want a deeper understanding of Balinese culture before joining a project.

Rather than arriving and immediately starting volunteer work, you’ll spend your first week settling in and experiencing key parts of Balinese life, culture, and daily routines.

Begin your Bali program with a one-week cultural immersion designed to help you settle in, understand local customs, and start your trip with confidence.

You’ll spend time experiencing Balinese traditions, village life, local markets, rice terraces, cooking, batik, temple culture, language, and orientation activities before beginning your main project.

Why Start With Culture Week?

✓ Settle into Bali gradually before beginning your project
✓ Learn about Balinese customs, etiquette, and daily life
✓ Visit local markets, villages, temples, and rice terraces
✓ Try Balinese cooking, batik, and traditional activities
✓ Learn useful local phrases and cultural context
✓ Gain confidence before starting your placement
✓ Particularly valuable for first-time volunteers and families

Culture Week May Include

  • Balinese traditions and orientation
  • Ubud market visits
  • Village life experiences
  • Rice terraces
  • Batik activities
  • Balinese cooking
  • Temple visits
  • Offerings and cultural customs
  • Introductory language and local orientation

The Culture Week is not mandatory, but we strongly recommend it for travellers who want a smoother start and a more rewarding overall experience in Bali.

Teaching (Ubud)

Support local children through English practice, classroom activities, games, conversation, and confidence-building alongside local teachers and coordinators.

Formal teaching experience is not usually required. The focus is on encouragement, communication, cultural exchange, and helping children build confidence in spoken English.

Construction & Renovation (Ubud)

Support practical improvement work in community spaces through painting, repairs, maintenance, renovation, and general hands-on assistance.

Projects vary depending on current local needs and may involve helping improve facilities used by children, families, or the wider local community.

Turtle Conservation (Nusa Penida)

Support turtle conservation on Nusa Penida through supervised outdoor work and conservation tasks. Activities may include cleaning, feeding support, habitat-related work, and helping with day-to-day routines connected to turtle welfare and conservation.

This is a strong option for travellers who enjoy outdoor work, wildlife-focused projects, and a more conservation-oriented experience.

When you contact us, we’ll discuss who is travelling, your preferred dates, the ages of any children, accommodation preferences, and the kind of experience you want before recommending the most suitable Bali program.

Accommodation, Comfort & Support

Volunteer travel does not have to mean shared dormitories, crowded hostels, or sacrificing comfort.

Horizon Impact Travel is designed specifically for adults, couples, families, professionals, and retirees who want to contribute to worthwhile projects while enjoying privacy, comfort, and local support throughout their stay.

Private accommodation is included.

Unlike many volunteer organisations that focus on shared volunteer housing, Horizon Impact Travel prioritises privacy, comfort, and personal space.

Accommodation options may include:

✓ Private rooms
✓ Family rooms
✓ Twin or double occupancy rooms

Whether you’re travelling alone, as a couple, or with children, we’ll help create a Bali program that matches your preferred level of accommodation and travel style.

Local Support Throughout Your Stay

Your Bali program includes:

✓ Volunteer project placement
✓ Airport pickup on arrival day
✓ Local orientation
✓ Private accommodation
✓ Local coordinator support
✓ Pre-departure guidance

Example Bali Volunteer Itinerary

Recommended First-Time Bali Experience (2 Weeks)

One of our most popular Bali options for first-time volunteers, couples, and families.

Week 1
Join the Culture Week in Ubud. Settle into Bali while learning about Balinese customs, village life, food, traditions, temples, and daily routines.

Week 2
Begin your chosen volunteer project in the Teaching or Construction & Renovation in Ubud, with a much stronger understanding of the local culture and environment.

This combination gives travellers both a cultural introduction and meaningful project time without feeling rushed straight into volunteering on arrival.

You can skip the Cultural Immersion Week if you want, and do only volunteering.

Is Bali Right for You?

Bali is one of the most appealing destinations for adults, couples, and families who want to combine volunteering with culture, comfort, and enjoyable travel.

Bali Could Be a Good Fit If You:

✓ Want to combine travel with a practical volunteer project
✓ Enjoy cultural experiences as much as volunteering
✓ Want flexibility rather than a rigid backpacker-style program
✓ Are interested in teaching, community projects, cultural immersion, or turtle conservation
✓ Like the idea of combining volunteering with time to explore Bali

Bali May Not Be the Best Fit If You:

✗ Are looking for a very remote expedition-style experience
✗ Prefer a fast-paced backpacker environment
✗ Specifically want large-scale wildlife volunteering beyond the turtle conservation option available
✗ Are looking only for shared low-budget volunteering

Tailor-Made Bali Programs

No two travellers are looking for exactly the same experience.

Some families want to focus on teaching. Others prefer construction and renovation, turtle conservation, or a more culture-led trip with a shorter volunteer element. Some travellers want a volunteer-focused programme, while others prefer to combine project work with sightseeing, relaxation, and additional travel in Bali.

Volunteer programs vary depending on the project, accommodation arrangements, dates, and who is travelling. Every program is built around your goals, travel dates, preferred accommodation, group size, and the type of experience you are looking for.

What Influences the Cost?

The final price depends on several factors, including:

✓ Number of travellers
✓ Length of stay
✓ Project selection
✓ Accommodation standard
✓ Pre- or post-programme extensions

Bali Programs Typically Start €1000 / £850 / US$1150 per person

Your personalised proposal will clearly outline accommodation options, recommended projects, inclusions, and a suggested itinerary before you make any commitment.
